• Clearly state how the editor’s readers will benefit from reading your piece.
  • Read the publishing guidelines(!!) - I can’t stress this enough, read the publishing guidelines, but also the submission guidelines
  • State why you’re the best (or one of the best) person to write about the topic
  • Let them know where else you’ve been published - this will help the publisher know if they want to be aligned with similar brands / publications
  • Be clear on flexibility, deadlines, expectations, answer any and every questions you think they may have. Proactivity goes a long way.
  • Be clear on what you’re hoping to get out of the publication: cash? Recognition? Practice collabing with a great editor? A backlink? Be honest.

Medium

Simply create an account on Medium (see this). You can then explore different publications and submit your piece to them. If you’re a non-native English writer, you may want to consider publishing your post in Fabio’s publication, Non-native English voices.

Make sure you read the submission guidelines before submitting to Medium editors!

Substack

It’s easy to start writing on Substack. Just set up an account and you’re good to go. Here are some useful suggestions on how to start writing on Substack

Social Media Post (LinkedIn/Facebook/Instagram/X)

A simple strategy is to copy and paste the first 5-6 sentences of your post and then add a link to the full article. I would break the post where the reader feels most compelled to keep reading. Then you can add something like “Click here to keep reading the article.” Doing this will also give you a chance to notice whether or not your piece starts strong!

Pitching to editors

When you’re pitching your article to a website, blog, or publication, make sure you read the submission guidelines. These often tell you how to pitch (who you should email, what to include in your email, etc.)

If they don’t give any specific info on how to do it, here’s a simple template you could use (feel free to adapt it).

Dear [Editor's Name],

My name is [Your Name], and I’m a [Your Profession/Expertise]. I’m getting in touch as I would like to pitch an article titled “[Your Article Title]” for [Publication Name].

Here is some info about my piece.

Summary
[Briefly describe the article’s main points and relevance to the publication’s readers.]

Reader Benefits
This piece will [explain the value it offers to readers, such as insights, solutions, or entertainment].

Why Me

[Mention a couple of reasons why you’re a suitable writer for them and include a link to your portfolio or a couple of your best writing samples]

I’ve read your guidelines and am flexible with deadlines and revisions.

Thank you for considering my pitch, and I look forward to the possibility of working together.

Best regards,
